To be honest, there seems to be no end in sight for the developments in technology. The new technology known as augmented reality is an impressive proof of that statement.
For a long time, tech experts have all been about improving the quality of graphics we see on our television, computer or mobile screen. With augmented reality, these graphics are going to no longer be limited to any screen. Augmented reality blurs the line between a computer generated image and what we can see, hear or even smell.
Clearing the Confusion
Many of us may confuse augmented reality with virtual reality. Virtual reality has been a real game changer but augmented reality is different from that concept. VR still depends on computer generated environments to give the user an experience of the real world. On the other hand, augmented reality is far closer to reality.
How It Works?
The idea of augmented reality is to superimpose graphics into the person’s line of vision. It is not only just visual but other senses such as audio and smell are also integrated with it. One of the easiest examples to understand augmented reality is the game that recently broke all records that is Pokémon Go.
How is Augmented Reality Changing the World?
Each and every development in the field of technology has proven to bring a change in the world as we know it. The gaol of our chase after such developments can be summarised as our wish to simplify our lives.
Augmented reality is going to do the same. Many applications are already using this new technology but it is important to mention that we have only scratched the surface of it yet. Augmented reality will evolve in the coming years and we are going to witness the wonders of it as we discover more in this filed.
For now, we have applications like Layar. Layar utilises the technology in combination of your phone’s camera and GPS to relay information about a certain location. For example, you may point your phone at a building and you are capable of bringing up its history using Wikipedia or its photos using Flickr. You may go as far as determine if any companies inside the building are hiring.
Future of Augmented Reality
As of now, it is safe to assume that this particular technology is still in its stage of infancy. However, the future does hold a lot for it provided we overcome some of the limitations. One of limitations tech experts need to overcome is the GPS. We all know that GPS is only accurate within 30 feet and it may not work at all indoors. On the other hand, mobile devices are not reliable for information relay due to their small screens, for this purpose, experts will have to develop wearables to support augmented reality.
Augmented reality is definitely going to impact a lot of aspects of our life. The business world, especially marketers, is going to benefit a lot from it.
